Sales Performance in February

BYD had an expressive performance in Sweden last month, with 112 plug-in and fully electric vehicles delivered, according to data from Mobility Sweden. Compared to February of the previous year, there were 62 registrations, an increase of 80.6%.

Portfolio and Local Strategy

BYD entered the Swedish market at the end of 2022 through a partnership with Hedin Mobility Group, one of Europe's largest dealerships, and expanded to Germany with the same partner. Even after adjustments to the German operation last year, Hedin remains the distributor and retailer in Sweden.

In Sweden, BYD offers three models: Sealion 7, fully electric; Seal U DM-i and Seal 6 DM-i Touring, both plug-in hybrids. The local page features financing options, including 0% interest rate for the Seal U DM-i starting at 1,916 kronor per month, 1,833 kronor per month for the Seal 6 DM-i Touring, and the Sealion 7 starting at 2,658 kronor with 0.95% interest. Additionally, there is a launch offer of 20,000 kronor for the Sealion 7.

Who leads the market and what happened to other brands

Volvo, headquartered in Gothenburg, was the best-selling brand in February in Sweden, with 2,160 registrations and a 26.8% market share, although it fell 43.5% compared to the same month last year. Tesla accounted for 553 vehicles (-10%), while Polestar saw an increase of 15% with 570 units sold. Among the Chinese brands, XPeng fell 3% to 59 units, and Nio registered no sales for the month after four deliveries in January.

The Volvo EX40, a 100% electric SUV, led electric vehicle sales with 1,184 units; the EX30 came in second with 583 registrations, followed by the Tesla Model Y with 533.

Electric Vehicle Adoption Scenario

Mobility Sweden data points to 19,341 new passenger car registrations in the month, -1.5% compared to February 2025. Battery electric vehicles grew 29% year-over-year, totaling 7,650 units, representing a 39.6% market share. Meanwhile, plug-in hybrids totaled 4,810 units, with a 24.9% share — a 5.2% increase compared to the same month last year.

In the aggregate of NEVs, deliveries totaled 12,530 units, 64.8% of the total new deliveries, an increase of 17.8% compared to the previous year. The report highlights that Sweden continues to be among the countries with the highest EV adoption, driven by public incentives.

Incentives and Public Policy Actions

In June 2024, a climate bonus was proposed for rural and low-income families, offering a monthly benefit of 1,500 kronor for up to three years. The mechanism was approved by the EU through the Social Climate Fund, with an allocation of €532.8 million, scheduled for implementation between 2024 and 2032. In addition to the monthly benefit, there is a one-time bonus of 18,000 kronor for the lowest-income families. Applications must be made to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

This reading reinforces Sweden's role as a key market for electric vehicles in Europe, supported by government incentives and a network of present brands, including BYD. What impact do you foresee for EV sales in the coming months given this context? Leave your opinion in the comments.
