Rivian reveals the R2 Launch Edition for ~US$58k; the 2027 Bolt is the most affordable EV. Learn how the two compare for the driver's pocket.
Rivian R2: launch edition and price that set the game
Two years ago, Rivian first showed the R2. Now, the production version arrives with the Launch Edition, priced close to US$58 thousand. The Premium AWD model offers up to 330 miles of range and 450 hp of power, delivering a more robust proposal for those seeking premium electrification.
What to expect from the US$45k R2
The promise of a more affordable R2, at US$45 thousand, has not yet materialized. Rivian states that this model will arrive at the end of 2027, with rear-wheel drive and just over 275 miles of range. In comparison, the rear-wheel-drive Model Y is already available today, which puts the R2 in this price competition from a lagging position.
Bolts and the race for affordability
While the R2 seeks to dominate the affordable premium segment, the 2027 Chevy Bolt enters as the cheapest option on the market, with a starting price of US$28,9990. The driver looking for savings may be impressed with the solution GM delivered for the Bolt, fixing many issues from the previous generation.
Heavy pocket: limited production and what it means
However, Bolt production was announced to end next year so the factory can dedicate itself to gasoline-powered SUVs. This reinforces the idea that the compact car segment may be declining, even with battery savings benefiting smaller EVs.
Why smaller EVs matter
The reasoning behind smaller cars is simple: smaller batteries reduce weight and cost, increasing efficiency and relative range. As vehicle size grows, battery cost increases exponentially. Smaller EVs remain an important solution for affordability, even if they are not the choice desired by the American consumer.
