BYD launches the ATTO 2 DM-i in the UK, featuring up to 621 miles of total range, 56 electric miles, and fast charging of up to 26 minutes.
BYD raises the bar for plug-in hybrids with the ATTO 2 DM-i
BYD advances once more in electric mobility. After presenting the F3DM at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, one of the first production PHEVs, the brand has now reached over 7.7 million plug-in hybrids and today expands the DM-i with the ATTO 2 DM-i, which arrives in the UK in May.
Technical Highlights
- Electric range of up to 56 miles in electric mode, for daily use
- Total range of up to 621 miles connecting the engine, generator, and electric components
- Fast DC charging: 30% to 80% in just 26 minutes
This evolution represents a leap forward from the F3DM, which required long recharge times and offered less electric range under the old NEDC cycle.
How DM-i works
Unlike traditional hybrids, the DM-i prioritizes electric driving. At its core is a 1.5 L Xiaoyun engine with a record thermal efficiency of 43%, which normally acts as a generator instead of driving the wheels.
- EV Mode: purely electric driving for most urban trips
- Series Hybrid Mode: the engine generates electricity while the electric motor MOVES the wheels
- Parallel Hybrid Mode: the engine assists the motor in high-demand situations
The result is a driving experience that approaches that of a 100% electric vehicle, especially in the city.
Blade Battery and Charging Advantage
The Blade Battery, with LFP chemistry, offers greater durability and thermal stability. In the ATTO 2 DM-i, it works with an intelligent energy management system to speed up recharges, increase safety, and extend service life.
The Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function allows the SUV to power external devices, making it a mobile power source.
Expanding DM-i Lineup
The ATTO 2 DM-i joins a growing family of plug-in hybrid models, including:
- BYD SEAL 6 DM-i — total range up to 935 miles
- BYD SEAL U DM-i — family SUV with up to 699 miles
- BYD SEALION 5 DM-i — up to 631 miles of range
These models demonstrate BYD's strategy of bringing DM-i technology to different segments, from compact SUVs to family vehicles.
From Startup to Global Hub
BYD was founded in 1995 with only 20 employees. Today, it employs over one million people and operates in 112 countries. The company reports an average of 45 patents per day, reflecting its commitment to innovation. Originally a battery manufacturer, BYD has consolidated its leadership position in electrified mobility.
