Mercedes GLC EV combines luxury, range exceeding 400 miles, and ultra-fast charging, with MB.OS and integrated AI technology.
Driving the Mercedes-Benz GLC EV for the first time in Portugal, I realized that the focus of this novelty is on maintaining the Mercedes character of luxury, even before it seems like an electric vehicle. The GLC EV promises to offer what is expected of a premium SUV sedan, without sacrificing the brand's typical versatility.
Platform and charging
The model is built on the new MB.EA, the first Mercedes on an 800-volt architecture. With this, it can accept up to 330 kW of charge, resulting in approximately 188 miles (305 km) of additional range in 10 minutes. From 10% to 80% of the battery, the announced time is 22 minutes.
Energy demand test
During the drive in Portugal, I tested the 400 kW fast charger installed at the hotel. Starting at 14% charge, the battery reached 82.4°F (28°C), ideal for fast DC. The display predicted up to 351 kW peak, but the station delivered a real 354 kW. From 14% to 60%, it took 11 minutes, with the addition of 49 kWh, maintaining an average of 260 kW. Naturally, the average power tends to drop as the charge approaches 100%.
Range and efficiency
Even with the idea of a performance-oriented pace, the average was around 2.54 miles per kWh (24.5 kWh/100 km). WLTP indicates a range of up to 444 miles (715 km), but the real experience depends on the driving style. The only variant presented so far is the GLC EV 400 4Matic, with two electric motors — a front one capable of disengaging for efficiency and a rear one with a two-speed transmission.
Performance and dynamics
With 483 hp and 590 lb-ft combined, the GLC EV accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. The heavy SUV surprises with its power delivery, although the iX3 might have a more brutal delivery, which can make the sensory experience different, even if less objective in pure numbers.
Mechanics and regenerative braking
Mercedes claims that up to 99% of typical braking occurs through regen, which can return up to 300 kW to the battery, with the physical braking system only engaging when necessary. The setup includes a two-speed transmission at the rear to increase efficiency and performance in fast corners.
Comfort, luxury, and technology
The exterior design is discreet and elegant, although the illuminated grille is striking. Inside, the single 39.1-inch screen dominates the dashboard and replaces the instrument cluster from previous versions. The result is an impressive visual experience, although some might prefer an instrument panel with multiple separate screens.
MB.OS maintains navigation integrated into the manufacturer's ecosystem, with an AI assistant that can use conversational commands via ChatGPT or Google Gemini. The camera, sensors, and radars form a robust set of safety and assistance features, although the AI system does not remember previous conversations after the vehicle is turned off.
The interior exhibits high-standard finishing, with AMG Line seats that hug the body in curves with excellent retention. The combination of height-adjustable suspension, coupled with air suspension, offers a smooth everyday ride and firmness in corners, with precision power steering that, according to the driver, surpasses the feel of some rivals.
The Sky Control roof technology shines at night, with glass that can become translucent or opaque, in addition to illuminated stars in the trim, creating a wow effect for passengers. The driving position is reinforced by the suspension and the rear-wheel steering of up to 4.5° of tilt, which helps the car feel smaller in quick maneuvers without compromising interior space.
I conclude that the GLC EV seems to have finally found the balance between traditional Mercedes sophistication and the efficiency of a modern electric car. If this balance is confirmed in scenarios outside a launch event, the GLC EV could become one of the most convincing options in the luxury electric SUV segment.
