Hyundai is preparing a strategic launch at the NY Auto Show 2026, with the Crater concept previewing the XRT line of off-road SUVs.
Hyundai promises a major announcement this week, with a grand world debut set for the New York Auto Show 2026. What may arrive is the first off-road SUV in the XRT line, presented under the Crater concept, already generating anticipation regarding the evolution of the family.
The Crater and the XRT Concept
The Crater was created at the Hyundai America Technical Center in Irvine, California, to anticipate the future of the Extra Rugged Terrain (XRT) models. The concept serves as a showcase for future line variants, such as the IONIQ 5 XRT, Santa Cruz XRT, and Palisade XRT Pro, showing that Hyundai intends to make XRT an identity of capability and emotion.
Design and Capabilities
The Crater features a robust stance, with increased ground clearance, 33-inch off-road tires, and underbody protection. Elements such as a wide skid plate and body cladding reinforce the idea of it being a vehicle ready for any terrain.
- Elevated ground clearance to tackle difficult trails
- 33" off-road tires
- Wide skid plate and side protections
- Multifunctional off-road controller and terrain mode selector
- Goal: optimize traction in snow, sand, and mud
Production and Future of the XRT Line
Although the Crater has not yet been confirmed for production, researchers have spotted camouflaged prototypes in testing, signaling that Hyundai may proceed with a production version in the future. During LA Auto Show week, Hyundai Design North America opened its new design studio, nicknamed "The Sandbox," dedicated to developing adventure vehicles and XRT equipment. The goal is for XRT to cease being just a trim level and become a line of vehicles with true capability.
Engine and Powertrain
Regarding the powertrain, everything points to an electric configuration, although it is unconfirmed whether it will be a BEV, PHEV, or extended-range electric vehicle.
Hyundai's Plan for the Coming Years
During the last annual shareholder meeting, Hyundai announced plans to launch 36 new or updated vehicles in the US, Canada, and Mexico over the next four years, including new XRT variants and derivatives.
How to Follow the Announcement
The main reveal will take place on April 1st, during press day, with a live broadcast on Hyundai USA's YouTube channel at 9:55 AM ET.
