Alexa+ arrives in the BMW iX3: Assistant AI that converses with the car comes to EVs
BMW will incorporate the Alexa+ architecture into its vehicles starting in 2026, beginning with the iX3, a BEV from the Neue Klasse line. The technology uses a large language model (LLM) to understand speech and generate responses, allowing for natural conversations between the driver and the vehicle about operation and useful information.
BMW iX3: details that mark the debut
The iX3 was presented at CES 2026 in Las Vegas. It can travel up to 500 miles on a full battery and supports charging up to 400 kW. This model is the first of the Neue Klasse, a line that prioritizes digitalization and electrification.
This debut signals that the Neue Klasse should grow to 40 models and updates from BMW, starting with the iX3.
Bernd Körber, Head of Product and Brand Management at BMW, describes the Neue Klasse as a new era of electric mobility, with a customer-centric digital experience and sustainable production. He adds that the project marks the beginning of a new chapter for driving pleasure.
Alexa+ and assistant customization
Daniel Rausch, Vice President of Alexa and Echo, states that BMW has been an excellent partner in introducing the first implementation of the new Alexa Custom Assistant. The combination of BMW's technology with Alexa+'s conversational capabilities makes the in-car experience more sophisticated and integrated.
Unlike static voice commands, the LLM allows for flexible responses and chaining of requests. For example, one can ask about the location of the world's most famous artwork and then ask for directions.
Daniel adds that the integration of Alexa+ with Alexa Custom Assistant opens up space for partnerships to create unique brand experiences, with smooth interactions and everyday utility for customers, starting with BMW.
Connectivity, EVs, and the future
Experts see connectivity as a rising differentiator in vehicles. According to McKinsey, about 69% of EV buyers intend to increase their use of in-car connectivity solutions and digital offerings, compared to 47% of internal combustion engine vehicle buyers.
By 2030, services like gaming and remote updates could generate between $250 billion and $400 billion in additional value for the mobility ecosystem.
