What is the i3 2027?

The BMW i3 2027 marks the debut of the new generation 3 Series with a 100% electric variant, creating a distinct alternative to the combustion version which remains based on the CLAR platform. The Neue Klasse architecture separates the EV from the traditional configuration.

Design and visual signature

The i3's look is anchored in the Vision DEE and Vision Neue Klasse concepts, maintaining BMW's striking front fascia. Instead of vertical grilles, the car displays an illuminated horizontal “grille screen” set in a black panel, reinforced by a distinctive daytime running light signature.

Line and space: dimensions and chassis

The wheelbase grows almost 2 inches compared to the current 3 Series. The version shown rides on 21-inch wheels, features pronounced shoulders, and frameless glass doors. The length and width fall between the current 3 Series and the M3, while the height increases by approximately 1.5 inches due to the battery floor.

Interior and technology

In the cabin, the i3 retains the 43.3-inch panoramic screen and the 17.9-inch central touchscreen, plus an optional 3D head-up display. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant gains an expressive face on the Roundel and responds to commands, activating various functions.

With Digital Key Plus, the vehicle recognizes up to seven users. Swiping the screen reveals 16 shortcuts for frequently used functions. The steering wheel gathers many buttons that only appear when the corresponding function is available, avoiding clutter. The layout places assistants on the left, and entertainment and communications on the right.

Four interior looks

  • Essential: Econeer upholstery in 'Vivo Gray', fabric dashboard with ambient lighting.
  • Contemporary: Veganza upholstery in Agave Green, Digital White, Castanea, and Black.
  • M Design: Black Veganza with M PerformTex inserts (Alcantara-like).
  • BMW Individual: Black Merino leather, with the option for M Sport seats in Adelaide Grey.

Performance and torque

The entry-level launch is the i3 50 xDrive, with 463 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque. The front induction AC motor and the rear externally excited synchronous motor distribute torque in approximately 37/63 (front/rear).

For reference, the M3 delivers 473 hp/406 lb-ft, and the M3 Competition xDrive delivers 523 hp/479 lb-ft. The i3 uses the central Neue Klasse architecture with the Heart of Joy for driving dynamics.

Chassis and dynamics

The suspension is shared with the iX3: independent front with lateral and diagonal links, five-link rear. Amplitude-adjusting dampers are optional. Compared to the SUV, the spring rates are slightly softer to accommodate the lower mass and center of gravity, aiming for agile and predictable handling.

Charging, battery, and infrastructure

The 108 kWh battery is integrated into the floor, featuring a silicon-carbide inverter. AC charging up to 15.4 kW and DC charging up to 19.2 kW via the BMW Wallbox Professional, which allows powering a home. There is also camping power supply capability with up to 3,700 watts available.

On the highway, the system accepts up to 400 kW at 800–1000 V stations, and works with 400 V infrastructure, including the Tesla network via NACS. The My BMW app uses AI to facilitate route planning and public charging location finding.

Design for circularity

BMW reinforces the use of recycled materials: the Econeer interior uses 100% recycled PET; the front assembly uses 30% recycled material, with 85% total recyclability for the part. The aluminum in the wheels and hubs contains 70–80% secondary materials, and half of the battery's cobalt, lithium, and nickel comes from recycled sources.

When it arrives and price

The i3 50 xDrive arrives in early 2027, with an estimated starting price in the range of US$ 60,000, aiming to offer a price parity relationship between EVs and ICEs, without sacrificing performance. BMW may also consider a possible rear-wheel-drive version with 322 hp, not yet confirmed.

Although the G50 combustion 3 Series will incorporate the Neue Klasse architecture, combustion engines are less responsive than electric ones, which could favor the i3 in traction scenarios, making it the choice among enthusiasts.

Conclusion

The i3 emerges as BMW's bet for the new era of the 3 Series, offering bold design, cutting-edge technology, and performance potential to captivate electric driving fans.
