What is the BMW i3 Neue Klasse?

BMW unveiled the i3 Neue Klasse, the second vehicle in the Neue Klasse line and the first electric sedan in the family, aligned alongside the iX3. The launch marks the resumption of the Neue Klasse as the brand's next step towards high-standard EVs.

Performance and Ultra-Fast Charging

The i3 uses an 800-volt (Gen6) architecture with charging capacity of up to 400 kW DC. The company claims a ~30% gain in range compared to Gen5 and 30% faster charging.

A range of up to 440 miles (EPA) is estimated. In the WLTP cycle, the i3 ranks among the longest, with up to 900 km (559 miles).

With 400 kW charging, the sedan can recover nearly 250 miles (440 km) of range in just 10 minutes.

  • It adopts the North American Charging Standard (NACS), with an integrated charging port for use on networks like Tesla Superchargers.

Power and Driving

The i3 50 xDrive (AWD) version features motors on both axles, delivering 463 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque. Details of other variants will be released closer to launch.

Design, Interior, and Technology

While maintaining the classic 3 Series silhouette, the i3 receives the Neue Klasse facelift with the new kidney grille and the “four-eye” design at the front, similar to the iX3.

The interior focuses on cutting-edge technology: a huge 17.9-inch screen in the center, BMW Panoramic Vision, and, as an option, a 3D Head-Up Display projected onto the windshield.

The steering wheel has been redesigned with more accessible multi-function buttons and distinct thumb rests, with an option for an M Sport steering wheel with spokes at the 4 and 8 o'clock positions.

At the heart of the car are four “superbrain” computers that, according to BMW, offer 20% more processing power compared to previous models.

Production, Price, and Competition

Production of the new i3 begins at the Munich plant, Germany, in August 2026, with deliveries expected in the fall.

Prices have not yet been disclosed, but the estimate points to a starting price of US$ 50 thousand to US$ 55 thousand. The iX3 50 xDrive, scheduled for sale starting this summer, appears on the list with a starting price around US$ 60 thousand.

When it arrives, the i3 will compete against the Tesla Model 3, the Mercedes-Benz electric C-Class, and other upcoming electric luxury mid-size sedans.

Conclusion

With 440 miles of range, ultra-fast charging, and a cabin full of technology, the BMW i3 Neue Klasse promises to transform long journeys. Would you bet on the future of electrification with the Neue Klasse?
