Chevrolet and Hyundai announce partnership for hybrid midsize pickup in Latin America
Chevrolet and Hyundai are accelerating their partnership to launch a midsize pickup aimed at the South American market. The model will be built on a widely reconfigured version of the Colorado platform, prepared to support hybrid powertrains from the start and featuring a more robust suspension for professional use.
Hybrid power from the start
The utility pickup will use an updated version of GM's 31XX-2 platform, already designed for electrified powertrains from the beginning. Thus, hybrids will run side-by-side with traditional combustion engines. Furthermore, the four-cylinder TurboMax engine, expected to gain power and torque in 2027, may appear in this new GM-Hyundai partnership.
Project designed for Latin American demands
Besides electrification, the platform is being adapted for markets like Brazil and the region, maintaining the body-on-frame configuration for greater robustness. A stronger rear axle should increase cargo capacity, while single-cab versions will continue to serve commercial buyers. The powertrain offering will be flexible, including diesel, possibly in conjunction with hybrid systems, resulting in one of the most versatile midsize pickups ever offered in the region.
The Hyundai-GM partnership: five models by 2028
Over the next few years, Hyundai and GM will launch five co-developed models, including pickups and vans. Each brand will apply its own design language, so the two lines will not be identical to each other. Possibilities include features like a removable roof on the Hyundai version, and the pickups are expected to compete directly with the Toyota Tacoma. The launch is scheduled for 2028, with the midsize pickup serving as the basis for the next generation of the S10 manufactured in Brazil, in addition to marking Hyundai's first real foray into the midsize pickup segment, surpassing the Santa Cruz.
In summary, the project aims to expand options for professional and leisure use in Latin America, joining forces between two automakers to increase presence in the midsize pickup segment.
