Overview

Mazda presents the 2026 CX-5, the revamped version of the crossover that leads sales in the USA. The exterior look remains close to the 2025 model, but the cabin is larger and the cargo space has been redesigned.

The 2026 CX-5 gets a revamped front grille, LED headlights, and two-layer daytime running lights, while the interior offers improved comfort and a more premium finish.

Space, Comfort, and Design

The wheelbase has been extended by 4.5 inches, freeing up more legroom in the second row.

The cargo opening now has a lower floor, with 40/20/40 split rear seats that recline to accommodate larger items. A panoramic sunroof is optional to increase the sense of spaciousness.

Inside, there is leather trim on the steering wheel and gear knob, two USB-C ports in the center console, and a wireless charger for smartphones, in addition to two 12V outlets in the trunk.

Technology and Infotainment

The 2026 CX-5 comes standard with Mazda Connect, featuring a 12.9-inch central screen and integration with Google built-in, Android Auto, and the new Gemini AI assistant.

There is also the option of a 15.6-inch screen on the top trim, with the screen mounted slightly to the right to improve visibility. The interface keeps frequently used icons fixed at the bottom and facilitates voice control.

The design and ergonomics were conceived to keep the driver focused on the road, with new buttons on the steering wheel for quick access to the infotainment.

Performance and Driving

The powertrain continues with the SkyActiv-G 2.5 L engine producing 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and the i-Activ AWD system.

The Mi-Drive modes include Normal, Sport, and Off-Road. The Sport mode raises the engine sound but does not offer a significant gain in steering stiffness, maintaining predominant use in Normal.

The suspension and balance have been adjusted to cater to families, aiming for firmness without sacrificing comfort.

Safety and Assistants

The safety list includes Rear Cross Traffic Alert with pedestrian detection, Front Smart Brake Support, Turn Across Traffic, Emergency Lane Keeping, Blind Spot Monitoring, Vehicle Exit Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition on the HUD, and automatic braking.

The ACC with Speed Limit Assist works well at both high speeds and in heavy traffic, with smooth stops and restarts. The Driver Attention Alert monitors signs of fatigue starting at 41 mph after about 20 minutes of driving.

For maneuvering, there are front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera with trailer guidance, and a 360 view to facilitate parking and low-speed towing.

The CX-5 for the US market is manufactured in Japan and is subject to a 15% import tariff, reduced from 25% in September 2025, according to the US-Japan agreement signed by executive order. Mazda states that it has not passed these costs on to consumers, citing cost-reduction initiatives.

Arrival at US dealerships is expected in the coming weeks.

Conclusion

The 2026 CX-5 brings significant advancements in cabin, comfort, and technology, without sacrificing practicality for families seeking space, safety, and connectivity.
