Visit of the Prime Minister of Pakistan to Doha

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will travel to Doha on February 23rd and 24th to explore new avenues for cooperation in trade, investment, energy, and labor export, as informed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He will be accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, as well as other ministers and authorities.

What is at Stake in the Negotiations

Among the objectives are reviewing bilateral ties, political engagement, and economic cooperation, with a focus on energy partnership, infrastructure development, and worker mobility.

  • Trade and investment
  • Partnerships in the energy sector
  • Infrastructure development
  • Export of skilled labor

According to authorities, the visit offers leaders the opportunity to discuss regional and global scenarios, reiterating the commitment to peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.

Relations between Pakistan and Qatar are already robust. In 2022, the office of the Emir of Qatar stated that Qatar Investment Authority plans to invest up to $3 billion in Pakistan to support the economy, focusing on transport, education, health, culture, media, information technology, and employment sectors. Furthermore, Qatar hosts nearly 300,000 Pakistanis, working in health, education, engineering, finance, and public service. A significant portion of the Pakistani workforce is employed in the construction and transport sectors.

The two nations also promote cooperation through forums such as the Bilateral Political Consultations, the Joint Ministerial Commission, the Joint Business Council, and the Trade and Investment Working Group. Additionally, Qatar acted to facilitate negotiations between Pakistan and Afghanistan last October, following border clashes.
