SXSW Summary

Gary Gaines, VP and Head of Sales at Rivian, stated that the reception for the R2 surpassed their own expectations during its debut in Austin at SXSW. The group reinforced its bet on the model as the path to profitability.

CEO RJ Scaringe describes the R2 as a turning point and the best vehicle ever developed by the company.

What Was Shown in Austin

  • R2 Performance: starting price of $57,990 with the Launch Package
  • Powertrain: dual-motor AWD, 656 hp, and 609 lb-ft of torque
  • Battery: 87.9 kWh with an EPA range of 330 miles
  • Fast Charging: 10% to 80% in 29 minutes
  • Launch Package includes Autonomy+ (driver assistance), towing up to 4,400 lb, semi-active suspension, and the exclusive Launch Green color

Deliveries are expected to begin “later this spring,” according to Scaringe. A Premium version at $53,990 with 450 hp is scheduled for late 2026, while the Standard version at $45,000 is not expected until late 2027.

Public Experience and Announcements

Rivian transformed a section of Congress Avenue in Austin into an off-road test track, open to SXSW attendees from March 13 to 18. The brand, the event's main sponsor, also featured a space called Electric Roadhouse for panels, shows, and exhibitions.

Deliveries and Production

Despite the positive tone, there is uncertainty about the exact timing of customer deliveries. Rivian indicated that deliveries could happen as early as this spring, by June 20, but it was unclear if this referred to customer deliveries or total deliveries.

Production is set to begin in the coming weeks at the Normal, Illinois factory, with the first shift and the addition of a second shift planned for late 2026, followed by a third in 2027. CFO Claire McDonough commented that the complexity of the launch might pressure margins in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, turning positive in the 4th quarter.

For 2026, Rivian expects to deliver between 62,000 and 67,000 vehicles, of which 20,000 to 25,000 would be R2 units.

Two Versions of the Same Car

An additional challenge for the sales team: the R2 arriving this spring will not be the same vehicle available six months later. Initial units will come with Gen 2 autonomy hardware without LiDAR. Starting in late 2026, R2 production with Gen 3 stack, including LiDAR and RAP1 chips, is planned.

Scaringe said that hardware retrofits are not in the plans, which could result in buyers facing two distinct generations.

Analyst Dan Levy, from Barclays, highlighted the risk: tech-focused buyers might prefer to wait for the version with late-2026 hardware.

Model Y in Focus

The R2 Performance, at $57,990, is priced almost identically to the Tesla Model Y Performance, at $57,490, pointed out as Rivian's main rival.

Rivian's shares closed at $14.86 on Friday (a 2.9% drop), with a slight rise in Monday's pre-market.

Conclusion: the R2 arrives with strong ambitions, but the delivery timing and hardware evolution may influence purchase decisions in the coming months. And you, would you buy the R2 now or wait for the version with LiDAR in late 2026? Leave your comment below to let us know your opinion.
