GWM confirms the Ora 5 as the engine for EV expansion in Australia, with a 2026 launch and a portfolio that could reach four models by 2027.

GWM Australia confirmed that the Ora 5, an electric SUV, will be the target vehicle for the brand's electrified vehicle offensive in the Australian market, aiming to expand the company's presence among local EVs.

Ending 2025 in 17th place in EV sales, the manufacturer recognizes a significant growth opportunity by prioritizing the SUV, the most popular segment among Australian consumers.

Ora Line Expansion Plan

The Ora 5 will act as the pilot for a range that GWM intends to expand to up to four models by mid-2027, reinforcing the bet on the Ora portfolio in the region.

This offensive aims to offer a technological alternative to established rivals like the BYD Atto 3 and MG ZS EV, with the Ora 5 as the entry car for the new family.

Specifications and Technology

Based on GWM's modular platform, the Ora 5 is larger than the current electric hatchback, measuring 4471 mm in length and having a 2720 mm wheelbase.

  • Front motor in China: 150 kW and 260 Nm.
  • LFP batteries available abroad: 45.3 kWh and 58.3 kWh, with CLTC range up to 480 km and 580 km, respectively.
  • Ratio between CLTC and WLTP: local figures should be lower when adjusted for Australian WLTP.

Inside, a cabin centered around a 15.6-inch touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster stands out, running Coffee OS 3 software, promoted as being more responsive than previous versions.

To facilitate the driving experience, GWM opted to keep physical switches for essential functions, contrasting with purely screen-based layouts.

Australian Engineering and Localization

Rob Trubiani, a veteran chassis expert, is central to the local strategy, helping to refine suspension, ADAS, and steering characteristics. His expertise is already being integrated into the Tank and Cannon projects and will expand to the Ora line over time.

The goal is to adapt the Ora 5's behavior to the preferences of Australian drivers and regional road conditions, seeking a drive that combines comfort, safety, and dynamics suitable for the local market.

Pricing and Market Positioning

For pricing reference, the entry-level Ora hatch starts at $35,990 driveaway, while the Jaecoo J5 EV reaches $36,990. The Ora 5 is expected to be positioned in the high 30k to low 40k dollar range, offering a higher option than the hatch without losing focus on the affordable SUV segment.

Besides the EV focus, GWM has developed gasoline, HEV, and PHEV versions of the Ora 5 for the domestic market, maintaining the 'middle Australia' strategy for flexibility to introduce non-electric options if demand guides it.

Investment in Dealer Training and Support

To support the launch, GWM is investing $2 million in a Master Tech curriculum and offering initial contributions to modernize showrooms and dealer training.

These strategic moves position the Ora 5 as the spark for GWM's expansion in Australia, with a specific focus on local development and building a customer base for the coming years.
