RAV4 PHEV 2026 arrives in Japan with more power and extended electric range
Toyota confirmed that the 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) will go on sale in Japan on March 9, 2026, expanding the sixth-generation lineup with more performance, greater electric range, and a new GR SPORT variant.
Conceived under the slogan “Life is an Adventure”, the RAV4 PHEV combines off-road capability with 100% zero-emission driving and practical power supply features, reinforcing Toyota's multi-pathway electrification strategy.
Cutting-edge Electric Range and System Power
- EV range of up to 150 km (92 miles) with a larger battery capacity
- Maximum system power of 242 kW (329 PS)
- Support for high-output charging
This increased range allows many daily trips—commuting, school runs, and shopping—to be completed without using fuel, while maintaining the flexibility of a hybrid for longer journeys.
Mobile Energy: External Supply and Emergency Backup
In addition to transportation, the RAV4 PHEV functions as a portable power source. The vehicle offers a 100V external outlet (up to 1,500W) accessible via:
- An outlet in the luggage compartment
- A connector that plugs into the charging port
This allows owners to power outdoor appliances—useful for camping, job sites, or recreation.
- Approximately 6.5 days with a 400W charge in HV Power Supply mode
- Up to 7 days when prioritized for extended supply time
This functionality enhances the appeal of the family SUV and the disaster-resistant power solution.
New GR SPORT Variant in the Lineup
The GR SPORT version has been added, bringing motorsport-inspired upgrades to the PHEV.
- Focus on handling precision and aerodynamic balance
- Front bumper with spoiler and wing-type spoiler at the rear
- GR Performance dampers, GR reinforcements, and specially tuned suspension
- Lower center of gravity through battery integration
- CFD and wind tunnel testing to optimize downforce at various speeds
The result promises efficiency combined with a more dynamic and engaging drive.
Pricing and Sales Targets in Japan
For Japan, Toyota aims to sell 700 PHEV units per month.
- RAV4 PHEV Z: ¥6,000,000 (approx. US$ 38,700)
- RAV4 PHEV GR SPORT: ¥6,300,000 (approx. US$ 40,650)
Toyota's Global Electrification Strategy
Toyota continues to position PHEVs as a critical step toward carbon neutrality. Instead of relying solely on fully electric vehicles, the company pursues a multi-pathway approach—hybrids, plug-in hybrids, BEVs, and other options—to meet regional needs.
With greater electric range, robust power, and practical features, the 2026 RAV4 PHEV represents a significant evolution for one of the world's most popular SUVs. For now, the model has only been confirmed for Japan, but similar updates may arrive in other markets where the RAV4 PHEV already plays an important role in Toyota's electric portfolio.
