Renault advances with the E-Tech 160 hybrid for Austral and Espace
Renault is developing a new hybrid powertrain with 160 hp for the Austral and Espace crossovers, in partnership with HORSE, the joint venture between Renault and Geely focused on engine development.
How the new system works
The setup starts with a 1.8-liter HR18 gasoline engine with four cylinders, operating on the Atkinson cycle, generating 108 hp. An electric motor adds 68 hp, bringing the total output to 160 hp. The 1.4 kWh lithium-ion battery weighs about 36 kg and is positioned under the front passenger seat.
Transmission and weight
The configuration includes a transmission without a traditional gearbox, with electronics that select the ideal gear according to load, temperature, and driving mode. With the system weighing around 100 kg, an improvement in fuel economy is expected.
Efficiency and range
Initial estimates point to an average consumption of about 4.5 L/100 km for the Austral and ~5 L/100 km for the Espace, with a range between refills close to 1,000 km.
Industry context
This approach signals an industry trend: instead of just reducing engine size, manufacturers are resorting to larger displacements for gains in smoothness and efficiency in hybrid systems.
Outlook and next steps
Prototypes have been spotted in road tests, indicating an update expected to reach showrooms by 2026.
