VW starts production of the ID.UNYX 08, an electric SUV with XPENG, offering 800V charging, OTA, and launch scheduled for the first half of 2026.
Volkswagen Group has begun mass production of the ID.UNYX 08, a large electric SUV developed in partnership with XPENG, at the Hefei plant in eastern China. The production line reached maturity 24 months after the cooperation began.
The ID.UNYX 08 features ultra-fast 800 V charging, Level 2 driver assistance systems (ADAS), and remote over-the-air (OTA) updates. The market launch is scheduled for the first half of 2026, and a second model from the partnership is expected to arrive later this year.
Context and vision of the partnership
According to Oliver Blume, CEO of VW Group, China has become the center of the group's strategy, with the ID.UNYX 08 demonstrating the approach created for China, combining German engineering with cutting-edge local technology.
VW's electric offensive in China
The ID.UNYX 08 is part of VW's largest electric vehicle offensive in China, with more than 20 new NEV models planned by 2026. The company aims to expand this portfolio to 50 NEVs in the Chinese market by 2030.
Chinese E/E Architecture: CEA
Volkswagen China Technology Centre (VCTC), the software unit CARIAD China, and XPENG collaborated to develop the China Electronic Architecture (CEA). This E/E architecture is intended to support all future VW models in the domestic market, including NEVs and combustion-engine vehicles. The first model based on the CEA is expected to reach the market later this year.
About the partnership
The VW-XPENG association was established in 2023 with a focus on large-scale product and technology development, seeking to combine the strengths of each group to create long-term value. He Xiaopeng, Chairman and CEO of XPENG, highlighted that the cooperation is already delivering tangible results and reinforcing mutual trust between the two companies.
Consumer Outlook
The initiative is aligned with the strategy to accelerate the offering of NEVs in China, with the promise of new models every year, and reinforces VW's commitment to the Chinese market through 2030.
