EV Pullback Hits Carbon Wheel Manufacturer, Leading to Restructuring

Australian manufacturer Carbon Revolution enters voluntary administration as EV demand retreats, with potential impacts on high-performance sports cars.

Carbon Revolution, the Australian manufacturer of carbon fiber wheels for brands like Ford, GM, and Lamborghini, has entered voluntary administration to facilitate a debt restructuring and seek to continue as a private company.

The move, similar to the American Chapter 11 concept, allows the company to reduce its financial burden while creditors and administrators determine the next steps, maintaining operations in Australia to continue new product development and production on schedule.

The restructuring already has the approval of nearly all senior secured creditors, but still depends on formal approvals by the administrators and creditors.

Why This Matters in the Current Context

The recent decline in demand for electric vehicles may resonate with combustion cars, especially sports cars, even if they are not electrically powered. Carbon Revolution was a supplier of carbon fiber wheels for high-performance vehicles from various brands.

Financially, the company reported losses of US$ 146.4 million in 2025, even with revenues that grew about 87% compared to the previous year, and it had already been delisted from NASDAQ earlier this year. In 2023, the company disclosed a backlog of US$ 460 million in OEM orders.

Furthermore, EV-related contracts were reduced as manufacturers recalibrated their plans, contributing to the current financial outcome.

One of the aspects used to illustrate the impact of wheel choices: a change in diameter can affect the range of electric vehicles. For example, on the Lucid Air Pure, switching from 19-inch to 20-inch wheels can reduce the range from about 420 miles to 372 miles, solely due to the difference in weight and inertia.

Carbon Revolution Chairman, Bob Lutz, stated that the market is increasingly recognizing the value of carbon fiber wheels and that the restructured company will be well-positioned to benefit from this trend at the right time.

The company informed that it will keep Australian operations stable, including new product development and meeting production schedules. The restructuring was agreed upon by almost all senior secured creditors, still subject to approval by administrators and creditors.

Featured Applications and History

  • Carbon Revolution’s carbon wheels reached the OE market with the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R in 2015.
  • Other applications include the Renault Megane RS Trophy-R, Ferrari 488 Pista, and C8 Corvette Z06.
  • It also supplied wheels for the Lamborghini Temerario and Range Rover Sport SV, maintaining a presence in various high-performance applications.
  • Outside of automotive, the company has supplied wheels for the Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter.

This scenario highlights how much the carbon fiber wheel niche is linked to both EV strategies and the extreme performance of sports cars.
